PRAISE FOR SIDE EFFECTS

"The culture of pharmaceutical overkill is the subject--and target--of this high-energy fifth novel from the little-known comic surrealist whose best books (American Goliath, 1998, etc.) rival the late 20th-century antic fiction of Kurt Vonnegut, Joseph Heller and Stanley Elkin. ... "A great comic novel and a huge leap forward for one of America's most underrated and accomplished writers.
— Kirkus Review

REVIEWS OF THE AUTHOR'S PREVIOUS BOOKS

A cheerful celebration of a big American myth... An inspired novel.
TIME Magazine

Bells clanging, lights aflash, the plot's ball bangs and rebounds. . . . A wonderful and wonderfully funny book.
—James Sallis
LA Times

His characters are haunting. . . . I have rarely enjoyed finding a writer as much as I have enjoyed my own discovery of Jacobs.
—Robert Cromie
Chicago Tribune

He manages to satirize our all-too-human foibles and failures without becoming too blackly unforgiving.
—Thomas M. Disch
Washington Post

Quietly amused, wry approach that gives distinction to Mr. Jacobs' work . . . his dry humor would be hard to improve on.
—Elizabeth Easton
The Saturday Review

A wonderfully engrossing read. . . . I recommend it to everyone who has given up of ever again being entertained at such a high level of aspiration.
—Michael Moorcock

A bawdy, joyous romp . . . it's a wonderful book.
—Jack Dann

Look upon the amazing world of Harvey Jacobs! Come one, come all, for an experience never to be forgotten!
—Fred Chappell

Like Doctorow's Ragtime and George R. R. Martin's Fevre Dream, it's totally realized.
—Howard Waldrop

A great book should aspire (and succeed) in making you laugh, making you cry and just maybe, making you think. . . . Harvey's novels will do all that.
—John Pelan

I encountered Harvey Jacobs quite a few years ago, with "The Egg of the Glak" (1971). I was stunned and delighted to discover a writer with a voice outside the range of his contemporaries, and a view of the world that's ... well, "skewed" doesn't capture it. I was delighted all over again to find that 38 years have not made Jacobs a bit more sane, or less surprising.
If you liked the Egg, you will like this book. If you didn't, you won't.
If you haven't read "The Egg of the Glak" then get going and find it. I'll not keep you here.

What a delicious book!I felt like I had been given a 20 pound box of Godiva chocolates...consume slowly, and appreciate. Mr. Jacobs has a unique sense of humor that is both dark and hopeful...please read....a conaisseur's delight!
The first review of Side Effects in the higly respected Kirkus Review called this novel "truly original--a great comic novel" comparing the author's work with Heller, Vonnegut, Elkin, etc. It is a free-swinging swipe at the RX industry, its centerpiece being Simon Apple on the last day of his life, ready to sacrifice himself for the good of the nation's
economy. Publication date is late February and already this novel is creating traction not only in the USA but overseas! By the author of American Goliath, My Rose & My Glove, Beautiful Soup, etc.
-Estelle Rose
As much as I'd like to give this five stars, I can't. It took way, way too long to finish this book. Not because it was difficult to read, or because is was long, or even because it wasn't well written. It just never called to me like most books, I could put it down and not pick it up for a couple days and do that over and over. Most books that are this funny and entertaining I can't read fast enough. However, this one, for some reason didn't have that attraction. It was unique to say the least and the author has some wild imagination. I don't think any adult can go wrong choosing to read this.
THis is truly one of the most original entertaining books I have read. Harvey Jacobs is in the league with Vonnegut, Roth, and all the great writers in recent history. His novel are all sophisticated, provocative, and highly original. If this had had a costly publicity campaign to bring it to the attention of the world out there, it would be a best seller for years.
