A Toxic Education Discovering a hidden danger in one of the most prominent schools in America eBook Mark Doo
A Toxic Education reveals the struggle of a family to discover, reveal and educate their daughter's school, the most prominent private college prep school in Hawaii, about the multiple pesticides they used on campus. Pesticides kill by affecting the neurological system of insects and there is scientifically documented risk of toxicity to humans. Doo and his wife did succeed in pushing the school to stop using pesticides and adapt a program of Integrated Pest Management, IPM, using herbicides and fungicides only. Later, in 2006 the school was awarded recognition as the "#1 Green School in America" by the National Geographic Society in part due to the same IPM program. For over 20 years, the author kept this struggle with the school a secret even as the school celebrated its Green School designation. In Hawaii we are all raised and educated in our island culture where loyalty and sticking together are more important than the individual. Local hierarchies of all types, politicians, and authorities function, for the most part, unquestioned. Both community and family press on individuals to not 'rock the boat' and the social price for outspoken individuals can be high. This is another 'Toxic Education' and it keeps a strong hold on us here. This family experienced the toxic tide, swam against it, and at long last succeeded on every level. It's an amazing inside story and it's wonderful to hear about it!

A Toxic Education Discovering a hidden danger in one of the most prominent schools in America eBook Mark Doo Reviews
Very interesting and, for us, close to home. I'm sure the school isn't happy about this book/subject but they finally changed their practices.
A Toxic Education is a short but powerful David and Goliath story that makes you question why it is so difficult for large institutions to do the right thing. The author's investigative reporting makes for an enjoyable read.
A father, concerned about his daughter's deteriorating health, discovers the rampant use of poisons such as Round Up at the prestigious school she attends. Can you imagine school kids eating playground clover once soaked with cancer-causing chemicals? Initially, the father's complaints to school officials fall on deaf ears. His determination to change things for the good of his daughter and for all the students brings about clashes with the school president, alumni, and administrators. The father finds out the same poisons used at the school are also sprayed at the on-campus estate of the president. In the end, the father is successful in getting those in power to curb the use of dangerous chemicals on campus grounds. Needless to say, his daughter's health improves.I applaud Mr. Doo for bringing this seemingly impossible-to-win battle into the public arena and for carrying on the good fight to safeguard the health and safety of our children.
Short yet powerful story about a very difficult real life experience. The writing is factual, fun, and endearing, and a very interesting quick read for anyone!
This is a succinct and straightforward account of one family's experience with "truth telling" to the largest private school in the country. I don't call it "whistle blowing" because the author and his wife had only one goal to protect their young daughter, and potentially, other young children like her. Well-written, especially for a first effort, Doo resists the temptation to become maudlin or over emotional, but I did come away from the book with a very clear understanding of the emotional toll taken on their family by the experience, and my consciousness raised about the dangers of chemical poisoning lurking .. well, everywhere. I highly recommend this book.
This book is an excellent story about one family's resilience against such a large institution. Pesticides are everywhere around us, and it is time that we wake up and realize what we are being exposed to. The time has come to stand up to these corporations and institutions, and hold them accountable for their lack of responsibility when it comes to the safety of students. I suggest this book to everyone I know! Quick and easy read too.
