Great book about Venice...a city I love!
Venice through the eyes of an artist...beautifully written!
There is are better Venetian tour guides than John & Souheir Rawlings.... This is a beautifully written book and is a must-read for anyone planning a trip to Venice!
Would never have thought that this was the author's first book! Wonderfully written from his eyes and heart! I had the chance to visit Venice last summer, but in the end didn't. Strangely I'm glad that I didn't now, because I've had the chance to read this wonderful love story of Venice and now feel prepared to go and really see and appreciate the city as it deserves. I will also try a few of the recipes that were sprinkled within!
At first I found the book unsettling, even while it drips with self-awareness, because of intensity with which John breaks down the fourth wall with his reader. The author is unavoidably pervasive in this quasi-cookbook, quasi-travel guide, fully self-aggrandizing quasi-journal. Then you realize its simply a love affair with this remarkable city being expressed with such flourish that you cannot escape its entrapment. You end up feeling like you're sitting across a table, sharing a spritz with a charmingly humorous professor who's knee deep in his favorite topic.
Wonderfully written. I felt like I was experiencing Venice right along with John.
